The L.A. music scene continued to diversify in 1993, expanding, if possible, on the eclecticism that marked last year’s list. Rap, folk, grunge, roots, new wave, pop-rock, industrial and more are represented in this look at new acts that made the biggest area impact this year .

Grant Lee Buffalo: The trio, which released a debut album on Slash Records, busted up the L.A. yawn-a-thon of earnest acoustic bands by playing unplugged mutations of glam-rock with a ragged edge. Singer Grant Lee Phillips writes space-baby lyrics from his desert trailer home, and sings them with the desperation of an urban idealist on overload.
