A man whose car broke down on the Golden State Freeway in Boyle Heights on Saturday suffered minor injuries when two assailants fired a shot near him before robbing him of $200 in front of his two young children.

Police Sgt. Paul Hast of the Hollenbeck station said the unidentified motorist was from “somewhere in Orange County” but left the scene so quickly that authorities did not get his name.

The shooting occurred just after 2 p.m. on the Golden State Freeway near Boyle Avenue.

As the man and his children waited with the disabled car, two men approached and demanded his money, Hast said. To intimidate the motorist, one man fired his gun into the pavement, and the victim was hit in the ankle by bullet fragments and pieces of pavement, Hast said.

The motorist gave the assailants the contents of his wallet, and they fled, Hast said. He was treated for minor injuries at the scene by paramedics. Hast said no arrests were made.
