A midday collision between a sailboat and a powerboat off Long Beach on Saturday left an Orange County man hospitalized with head injuries, Los Angeles County lifeguards said.

The injured man, identified as Michael Summer of Garden Grove, was picked up by a Long Beach lifeguard rescue boat, then transported to Long Beach Community Hospital by paramedics. He was in stable condition late Saturday, hospital officials said.

The collision between the 39-foot sailboat and 20-foot powerboat occurred about 11:50 a.m. a mile south of the Long Beach breakwater, said Dirk Crawford, marine safety officer for the Long Beach lifeguards.

A Coast Guard spokeswoman said Summer, the owner of the powerboat, remained conscious after the incident, but suffered severe head injuries.
