NEWPORT BEACH : Council Reelects Mayor, Deputy
Mayor Clarence J. Turner and Mayor Pro Tempore Jean H. Watt were appointed last week to second one-year terms in those positions by the Newport Beach City Council.
The seven members of the City Council annually elect a mayor and deputy mayor from among their ranks. Turner has been mayor, largely a ceremonial position, for one year.
Turner said Monday that he appreciates the endorsement, which he sees as a vote of confidence from his peers. Council member John W. Hedges was absent.
Turner was elected mayor last year when Watt was elected to the deputy position. Turner will step down as mayor when his term as council member expires next year, he said.
