COTO DE CAZA : Children Read Up a Storm for Charity

Share

Elementary school students raised more than $500 for the Braille Institute of Orange County in the Oak Ridge Private School’s first Read-a-Thon.

The youngsters read 4,000 pages in nearly 200 books of short stories and poetry.

“The kids just read and read and read,” said Jayne Daniels, director of Oak Ridge’s Coto de Caza campus. “They learned a great deal about charitable giving in the process of this project, and it gave them an opportunity to broaden their vocabularies as well.”

Derek Steffien, a first-grader, and Veronica Welch, a fifth-grader, were each made principal for a day for their outstanding efforts during the Read-a-Thon. Derek declared “extra-long recess” during his turn at the helm.
