ETHNIC STUDIES: Other than an occasional fight or two, there hasn’t been much racial tension in Conejo Valley high schools. But members of the different ethnic groups tend to hang out with one another rather than cross cultural lines, students say. . . . So the schools held a daylong conference to get students talking (B4). The activities forced students to work together to solve problems. . . . About 80% of the district’s enrollment is white. The others: Latinos (11.5%), Asians (5.5%), African Americans (1.3%), Filipinos (0.6%), Native Americans (0.5%) and Pacific Islanders (0.3%).

STILL PARTYING: Times may be tough, but Ventura County residents are still in a mood to party. . . . “It’s excellent. We’re really busy. It’s stronger than last year,” said JoAnna Catalano of Epicure Catering in Ventura, which has 60 holiday parties lined up. Largest: 400 guests. “But people are cutting back on their guest lists. Most are more like 30 to 50.” . . . Companies are cutting back more than individuals, she said, with some opting for paper and plastic instead of china. . . . And those days of getting plastered at the office party are long gone. “People have cut down on the alcohol tremendously. They don’t want the responsibility.”

BIG RUSH: Buena High School’s George Keiaho is the second-leading rusher in state history. Now, in his last season, he’s making his final push for a goal that has always eluded him: winning a section championship (C10).

HOT HEADGEAR: That new state law requiring bicyclists under 18 to wear helmets is causing stampedes at Ventura County bike shops. “We’re easily selling 30 a week,” said John Jeffers at Newbury Park Bicycle Shop. Price range: $29 to $129. . . . “Some parents are going for the upper-end stuff because the kids think they’re cool. They figure the kids will be more likely to use them.” What’s hot? Helmets with visors, slick colors, graphics and gimmicks like air pumps that provide a custom fit. “Helmets used to be uncool, but now you see lots of people wearing them.” . . . Big problem: lack of uniform safety standards (D3).
