Bill Planned to Ban Handguns

Saying that longer prison sentences have not curbed violence in California, a Southland legislator is planning to introduce legislation next year to ban handguns.

Assemblyman Terry B. Friedman (D-Brentwood) said in a memo to other lawmakers that he wants to ban the civilian sale, transfer, use and possession of handguns and handgun ammunition. His bill also will include financial incentives to encourage handgun owners to turn in their weapons during a two-year amnesty, as well as longer prison sentences for those who use handguns in crimes.

“Gun violence is rupturing the social fabric of California,” Friedman said in his memo. “It is time to take bold steps to control the frightening proliferation of dangerous guns in our state.”

An aide said the bill will be introduced in January.
