Walnut : Ashley to Serve as Mayor
There’s a new mayor in town.
City Council members voted last week to appoint Councilwoman Bert Ashley to the mayor’s seat, which is rotated each year.
She replaces Councilman William T. Choctaw, who was reelected last month. This will be Ashley’s third one-year stint as mayor since she was elected in 1980.
Though the mayor holds no more authority than other council members, the seat demands that Ashley run the council meetings and act as the city’s official representative.
The council appointed second-year Councilman Jack Isett mayor pro tem.
