Management Shouldn’t Investigate Itself

Share

* I would like to offer a few comments in response to Tracey Kaplan’s Oct. 24 article on the county auditor/controller’s fraud unit.

Having recently participated as a witness in an investigation conducted by this group, I couldn’t agree more with Herman Santos’ appraisal of their abilities. The investigators impressed me with their dedication and expertise, and they have a real commitment to protecting the county and the taxpayers from abuses of the system perpetrated by some employees.

Unfortunately, I also must agree with the statement made by the county union officials. Although the investigators diligently pursue their work no matter who is involved, the county appears to be more interested in resolving complaints directed at rank-and-file employees than in policing the transgressions of their management staff. The practice of sending the results of an investigation back to the department for resolution only works if the management is not the subject of the investigation.
