A Lancaster woman held on theft-related charges at Sybil Brand Institute escaped from jail and was discovered missing early Saturday.

Sherrie Pike, 35, apparently fled the four-story county prison for women sometime before midnight Friday. Pike, who was being held in lieu of $58,000 bail since her arrest Nov. 21 by Antelope Valley deputies, was due in court for a hearing Tuesday.

Authorities said Saturday they had not determined how Pike escaped the 1,900-prisoner Eastside Los Angeles facility. They added that it was the first escape of a Sybil Brand prisoner that they could recall since 1986.

When Pike was discovered missing about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, the facility was locked down and searched. The facility remained locked down during the day Saturday, with all visits canceled until further notice.

Pike was last seen wearing a green jail dress and described as white, about 5 feet, 2 inches tall, 117 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.
