Mike Gartner scored with 5:31 remaining to give the New York Rangers a 4-3 victory Saturday night over the Toronto Maple Leafs in a showdown at Toronto between the two teams with the NHL’s best records.

Mark Messier passed from the right-wing circle and Gartner, rushing to the crease, directed it past goaltender Felix Potvin.

Esa Tikkanen, Steve Larmer and Adam Graves also scored for the Rangers.

Calgary 6, Philadelphia 0--Mike Vernon posted his first shutout of the season at Calgary.

Vernon was steady but was rarely tested against the NHL’s top scoring team.

St. Louis 4, Dallas 3--Brett Hull had a goal and an assist and Brendan Shanahan had a goal and two assists at St. Louis.

Pittsburgh 7, Hartford 6--Jaromir Jagr came out of the penalty box and scored on a breakaway 2:04 into overtime at Hartford, Conn. The goal ruined a great comeback by the Whalers, who scored four goals in the third period to force overtime.

New Jersey 2, Chicago 2--When the Devils and Blackhawks get together, overtime seems inevitable.

The teams tied 2-2 at East Rutherford, their seventh overtime game in their last eight meetings.

Quebec 3, Vancouver 1--Andrei Kovalenko scored two first-period goals, one on a penalty shot, at Quebec.

The Nordiques have lost only one of their last eight games.

Montreal 8, Boston 1--Vincent Damphousse had two goals and two assists and the Canadiens scored on their first three shots in the second period at Boston.

Washington 6, Ottawa 1--Dimitri Khristich scored twice and added an assist as the Capitals skated around the Senators at Ottawa.
