NHL ROUNDUP : Richter Extends Streak in Ranger Victory

Mike Gartner broke a third-period tie with a shorthanded goal with 7:27 left, and Mike Richter extended his unbeaten streak to 16 games as the New York Rangers defeated the New Jersey Devils, 2-1, Sunday night at New York.

The Rangers, 16-1-2 in their last 19 games, became the first team to win 20 games this season and tied Toronto for most points in the NHL with 42.

Since starting the season 0-4, Richter is 13-0-2 with a 2.25 goals-against average. The Rangers record of 19 was set by Davey Kerr in 1939-40, the last season the team won the Stanley Cup.

Buffalo 3, Boston 1--Yuri Khymlev had two goals and Dominik Hasek made 23 saves to lead the Sabres at Buffalo.

It was the Sabres’ seventh victory in 11 games since star center Pat LaFontaine was sidelined because of a knee injury and improved the team’s record to 12-13-2.

San Jose 2, Florida 1--Sergei Makarov broke a 1-1 tie in the third period at San Jose, extending the Sharks’ unbeaten streak to five games.

The Sharks’ streak is their longest in franchise history. They topped the 3-0-1 mark they set Nov. 26-Dec. 3, 1991.

Dallas 4, Edmonton 3--Russ Courtnall’s second goal of the game with 7:13 left lifted the Stars at Dallas.

Dallas improved to 8-1-5 at home. Edmonton, starting a five-game trip, fell to 1-10-3 away from Northlands Coliseum.

Winnipeg 6, Detroit 4--Keith Tkachuk scored twice in the last two minutes to lead the Jets at Winnipeg.

The Jets scored four times on their first 10 shots.
