LOS ANGELES : Housing Project Rebuilding Expected to Start in Year

In the wake of President Clinton’s announcement Saturday of a $46-million grant for the rebuilding of Pico Gardens and Aliso Apartments in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles officials said Monday that tenant relocation and demolition are expected to start within 12 months.

“That’s what our hope is,” said Joseph Gelletich, deputy executive director of the city’s Housing Authority. Under the grant, the adjacent gang-ridden and run-down public housing complexes would be rebuilt with an eye toward security. The 574 units now in barracks-like settings would be replaced by townhouse-style apartments.

The federal government in August gave preliminary approval to the plan, awarding it $3.7 million for architecture and planning fees. The $46 million in construction funds were anticipated, but not guaranteed until the President’s announcement during his visit to Los Angeles.
