The Florida Marlins offered arbitration before Tuesday’s midnight deadline to shortstop Walt Weiss, increasing the likelihood that he will remain with the team next season.

Another player facing the deadline, pitcher Mark Gubicza, returned to the Kansas City Royals for a $550,000, one-year contract.

In other news, free-agent outfielder Stan Javier agreed to a $1.2 million, two-year contract with Oakland and reliever Edwin Nunez re-signed with the Athletics for a $430,000, one-year deal. Javier played with the Angels last season.

Up to 41 major league players, among them Rafael Palmeiro and Chris Sabo, said goodby to their former clubs when they were not offered arbitration.

As of early evening, only six players had been offered arbitration, one of them former Dodger pitcher Fernando Valenzuela by the Baltimore Orioles.

Players offered arbitration have until Dec. 19 to accept or reject, and can continue negotiating with their old teams through Jan. 8. Players who weren’t offered arbitration can’t re-sign with their former clubs before May 1.

Boxing

The International Amateur Boxing Assn. will allow women to compete in the ring, the organization’s president said.

“We are happy to announce for the first time in public that women are now allowed to participate in Olympic-style boxing, providing it will be under the strict patronage of the international boxing body,” Anwar Chowdry of Pakistan said.

Women were granted the right to box in the United States this year.
