Compton : $1,000 Reward for Leads in Vandalism

Share

The Compton Unified School District is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of vandals who have caused extensive damage to Compton schools in recent months.

In November, a fire struck Whaley Middle School, destroying three classrooms and damaging seven others. Officials said the fire had been deliberately set.

Mark Twain Elementary has suffered repeatedly from vandalism since November. First, vandals hit 16 of the 30 classrooms, breaking windows, spray-painting walls and damaging books and other classroom materials. During the Thanksgiving weekend, thieves stole food from the school’s cafeteria. Last weekend, three additional classrooms were trashed.

Police have arrested suspects in connection with the Whaley fire, but officials said they are still seeking more information about the incident. Anyone with information on the incidents should call (310) 631-5910 or 631-4981.

“We need the neighborhood to help protect its schools and we’re hoping this will help,” said Arianna Barrios, a district spokeswoman.
