PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Seahawks’ Mirer Is Main Concern

Share

Despite having a seven-game winning streak against Seattle, the Raiders are leery about their matchup with the Seahawks on Sunday at the Coliseum, and rookie quarterback Rick Mirer is the reason.

In their 17-13 victory over Seattle in September, Mirer was playing in only his second NFL regular-season game. Since then, the former Notre Dame standout has put up some impressive numbers. He has completed 57.6% of his passes for 2,240 yards, which already is fourth on the all-time list for rookies. Last week, he passed for 287 yards, best in his career, in Seattle’s 31-16 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

“He’s a good, accurate quarterback, who can scramble and give you problems,” Raider safety Derrick Hoskins said. “He was a little inexperienced when we played before, but you can see that he’s gotten better.”

Mirer, who has started all 12 games for the Seahawks, completed 14 of 22 passes for 149 yards in the first game against the Raiders. He did, however, throw two of his 15 interceptions.

The Raiders’ running back situation did not get any clearer Thursday. but at least one and maybe two of their injured veterans might play Sunday. Napoleon McCallum, who has sat out two games because of an appendectomy, is a step closer to returning after going through some drills. Fullback Steve Smith, who injured an ankle against Buffalo last week, did not practice for the second consecutive day, but he said he will be ready to play against Seattle.

The Raiders added running back Charlie Young, who played at Stanford, to their five-man practice squad and released defensive lineman Akili Calhoun. Offensive tackle Greg Skrepenak, who has sat out the season because of a knee injury, has worked out with the practice team this week and has been upgraded to doubtful.
