A 20-year-old man was shot in the chest during an argument outside an apartment complex and police quickly arrested a youth on suspicion of attempted murder.

Toye Jones, who lives at the apartment complex in the 700 block of South Knott Avenue, where the shooting occurred, was in critical condition Saturday at UCI Medical Center in Orange, Buena Park Sgt. Chris Bentley said.

Police initially detained six juveniles, ages 13 to 17, in connection with the shooting, but arrested only one youth from Anaheim, Bentley said. The 16-year-old suspect was booked into Orange County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of attempted murder.

The victim, one of his friends and the group of teens apparently were standing in front of the apartments about 8 p.m. Friday when an argument broke out, Bentley said.

During the argument, police said, the victim’s friend hit one of the juveniles in the head with a beer bottle, although investigators were unsure if that happened before or after Jones was shot.

Police recovered a small-caliber handgun believed to have been used in the shooting, Bentley said.
