Target Immigration--the Illegal Kind

Share

In the well-written article on my legislation to protect tracking dogs used by the U.S. Border Patrol and other federal agencies, I was amazed to read that Roberto Martinez, director of a pro-illegal alien group in San Diego, was upset with this proposal.

Mr. Martinez told The Times that legislation such as the bills I have introduced this year to help us regain control over our borders--including this one--”targeted immigrants.” In reality, all of my proposals focus on illegal immigration. It is unfortunate that too many people fail to make the distinction between legal and illegal immigrants, because while I strongly support legal immigration, I equally strongly oppose the high levels of illegal immigration that are causing so many problems here in Southern California and indeed throughout the country.

I also hope he didn’t really think it was “offensive and absurd” that I was trying to protect highly trained animals that protect our borders and also play a vital role in combatting drug smuggling. These animals deserve protection, and I will work hard during the upcoming year to pass my legislation.
