Austria’s Mayer Skis to First World Cup Victory

Christian Mayer of Austria gained his first victory in a World Cup event by winning the giant slalom Monday at Val D’Isere, France.

Mayer’s previous best finish was ninth in a giant slalom in 1991.

Alberto Tomba of Italy, winner of the past two Olympic giant slaloms, finished 17th. It was his worst finish in a slalom or giant slalom that he completed since March of 1989, when he placed 21st in a giant slalom in Japan.

College Basketball

Arkansas (5-0) and North Carolina (7-1) held on to the top two spots in the Associated Press college basketball poll. UCLA (4-0) is ranked ninth.

The starting time for UCLA’s game against No. 25 Louisiana State on Saturday at Pauley Pavilion has been changed to 6:30 p.m.

College Football

Georgia quarterback Eric Zeier said he will not skip his senior season to make himself available for the NFL draft, giving him an opportunity to strengthen his arm and set more Southeastern Conference records.

Idaho quarterback Doug Nussmeier, who led Division I-AA with 33 touchdown passes, won the Walter Payton Award as the division’s top player.

Baseball

Lynn Martin, a former Secretary of Labor in the Bush administration, withdrew her name from consideration as baseball commissioner.

Shortstop Ozzie Guillen and the Chicago White Sox agreed to a three-year contract extension. After sitting out most of the 1992 season because of torn ligaments in his right knee, Guillen batted .280 with four homers and 50 runs batted in last season. . . . Left-hander David Wells (11-9, 4.19 ERA) agreed on a three-year, $7.5-million contract with the Detroit Tigers.

The Dodgers and left-handed reliever Steve Wilson (1-0, one save, 4.56 earned-run average) agreed on a one-year contract.

The New York Mets traded right-handed pitcher Marc Kroon to the San Diego Padres for shortstop Pablo Martinez, completing a deal begun earlier this month.

The Cleveland Indians traded infielder Randy Milligan to Montreal for a player to be decided.

The Oakland Athletics selected pitcher Carlos Reyes from the Atlanta Braves’ organization with the first pick in the major league draft.

Boxing

Roberto Duran, 42, will fight his 100th professional bout tonight when he meets 21-year-old middleweight Tony Menefee (19-1) at Bay St. Louis, Miss. Duran is 90-9, with 62 knockouts.

Undefeated Russian Yuri Arbachakov knocked down South Korean Cha Nam-Hoon in the 11th round at Kyoto, Japan, and won a unanimous decision to retain the WBC flyweight title.

Miscellany

Tennessee (5-0) was a unanimous choice as the nation’s No. 1 women’s basketball team for the second consecutive week. USC is No. 11, Stanford No. 13. . . . The Atlanta Hawks released point guard John Bagley.
