Franco, White Sox Agree to Deal

Second baseman Julio Franco and the Chicago White Sox agreed to a $1 million, one-year contract that gives him the chance to earn an additional $1.5 million in performance bonuses.

Franco, 32, hit .289 with 14 home runs and 84 runs batted in for the Texas Rangers last season. He has a .300 average over 12 seasons.

Tennis

Pete Sampras and Steffi Graf were named world champions for 1993 by the International Tennis Federation.

Sampras won Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, was runner-up at the Australian Open and reached the quarterfinals of the French Open. He won eight tournaments and finished with the No. 1 ranking on the ATP Tour computer.

Graf won 10 tournaments, including the French Open, Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Virginia Slims Championships. She also recaptured the No. 1 ranking from Monica Seles, who sat out most of the season after being stabbed by a spectator on April 30 during a tournament.

Tracy Austin and Jim Pugh are among the players who will compete in a tennis tournament today through Sunday at the Jack Kramer Tennis Club in Rolling Hills Estates.

Pro Basketball

New Jersey Gov. Jim Florio and Philadelphia 76er owner Harold Katz said they are close to completing a deal to bring the NBA team to Camden.

After a 10-minute meeting at the governor’s office in Trenton, Katz and Florio said an official announcement regarding the move and the construction of an arena on the Camden waterfront could be made by the end of this week.

Hockey

Russia’s No. 1 team defeated the United States, 5-1, in the Izvestia Cup hockey tournament at Moscow.

The Izvestia Cup is an important testing ground for U.S. Coach Tim Taylor, who will select a roster for the Winter Olympics.

Miscellany

Five University of Washington football players and two stores that sell Huskie souvenirs have sued the Pacific 10 Conference in an attempt to lift a bowl ban and other sanctions against the team.

Riddick Bowe, former world heavyweight champion, will meet unbeaten Francois Botha of South Africa in Las Vegas on Feb. 5.

Also on the card will be a title fight matching unbeaten WBC featherweight champion Kevin Kelley and Jesse Benavides.

Florida State retired uniform No. 17, worn by Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward.

Redshirt sophomore Doug Annison, who averaged 4.2 points and 1.7 rebounds last season, has left the Louisiana State basketball team.

Mike Oviedo, a Long Beach City College basketball player, has been undergoing tests at a Modesto hospital to determine what caused him to collapse and stop breathing Sunday morning while waiting to board a team bus after playing in a community college basketball tournament.

Jim Milhon, Azusa Pacific football coach, announced that he will retire after the 1994 season.

Milhon, whose teams are 80-61-4 in 16 seasons, will remain at the university as an associate professor in the physical education department.

Frank Fuller, a former defensive tackle for the Rams and Chicago Cardinals, died. He was 64.

Fuller was one of nine players traded to the Cardinals in 1959 for running back Ollie Matson.

Helen Dell, a former Dodger Stadium organist, died Monday. She was 71.
