SOUNDS LIKE A NEW WOMAN from the editors of New Woman Magazine (Penguin: $8.95; 83 pp., illustrated, paperback original). This anthology contains 10 years of celebrity quotations, divided into the categories of “Sounds Like a New Woman” and “A Thump on the Head.” The latter are often unintentionally hilarious: “There’s only two things you people (women) are good for: Having kids and frying bacon” (Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight) or “I love being under submission to my husband” (Tammy Faye Baker). However, the editors inadvertently prove their dictum that sexists can belong to either gender by listing comments about men who don’t need women as “Thumps,” but lauding women who dismiss men.
