As residents in Laguna Beach kept an anxious watch, a storm expected Saturday stalled off the coast, but forecasters predicted it could move into the area overnight.

The National Weather Service was calling for a 40% chance of rain today, with the chance of showers dropping to 20% by nightfall.

The storm stalled about 350 miles off the Southern California coast Saturday, losing much of its energy, the weather service reported. Light rain was reported Saturday night in some areas.

The storm was expected to drop no more than a half-inch of rain along the coast and about an inch in the mountains, according to WeatherData, which provides forecasts for The Times.

“It doesn’t have a whole lot of moisture with it,” meteorologist Curtis Brack said.

By Monday, forecasters were calling for mostly sunny skies, with high temperatures in the low- to mid-60s.

With rain expected, residents and merchants in Laguna Beach were hoping barriers of sandbags, hay bales and concrete rails would prevent mudslides and floods in fire-scarred areas.

Crews in Laguna Beach worked all week to clear debris that had collected behind the hay bales during recent rainstorms.
