Two daily round-trip commuter trains to Los Angeles will be added March 28, the Orange County Transportation Authority has announced.

The addition will bring to three the number of daily commuter trains, excluding the Amtrak system.

OCTA said the new service will be integrated into the Metrolink system, which has routes in five counties.

In addition, the new commuter trains will start in Oceanside, allowing residents of northern San Diego County more opportunities for easy travel to Orange and Los Angeles counties. The increase in service will also benefit Orange County residents, officials said.

Sarah L. Catz, an OCTA board member, said the new service means commuters in Orange County “truly will have more options available to them.”

John Catoe, OCTA’s director of operations, said the changes will also bring savings for commuters. “In most cases, monthly passes will be cheaper,” he said.

He added that every train station will have automated ticket machines by March 28. “You can buy your passes there with a credit card,” he said.

The timetable for the new train service is still being arranged and will be announced later, OCTA officials said.
