Two teen-agers accused of shooting a 17-year-old Chatsworth High School student who refused to give up his backpack during a robbery try last week were charged with attempted murder Thursday, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office announced.

The boys, a 14-year-old from Sylmar who police said confessed to the shooting, and a 17-year-old from Lake View Terrace, were arrested Tuesday, six days after Gabriel Gettleson was shot while standing in front of the school waiting for a ride home from his mother.

On Monday, a 17-year-old Burbank youth was charged as an accomplice in the shooting. He allegedly drove the triggerman from the scene.

The youths charged Thursday were also accused of a mini-crime spree in which they allegedly stole a jacket from a couple at a Sun Valley high school and tried to steal a backpack from another Chatsworth High School student only moments before Gettleson was shot.

Police have said the youths are associated with graffiti “tagging” crews.

Gettleson, who suffered bullet wounds to the left hip, left shoulder and chest, remains in intensive care at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, authorities said.

On Thursday, the district attorney’s office charged the 14-year-old with premeditated attempted murder, attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, district attorney’s spokeswoman Suzanne Childs said. If convicted of all charges, the boy could be remanded to the California Youth Authority until he is 25, she said.

The 17-year-old, who prosecutors are trying to put on trial as an adult, faces charges of attempted murder, attempted robbery and robbery, Childs said.

If convicted as an adult, he could spend the rest of his life in prison, she said.

Prosecutors contend that on Dec. 15--just hours before the 1:40 p.m. shooting of Gettleson--the 14-year-old robbed a couple at gunpoint of a jacket at Polytechnic High School. Moments before they shot Gettleson, they attempted to take the backpack of another student at Chatsworth High, Childs said.

Their arraignment is scheduled Monday at San Fernando Valley Juvenile Court in Sylmar.
