NHL ROUNDUP : Gartner Gets 600th Goal in Victory

Mike Gartner became the sixth player in NHL history to score 600 goals as the New York Rangers extended their home unbeaten streak to 15 games with an 8-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils Sunday night at New York.

Gartner scored twice and also had an assist on one of two goals by Sergei Nemchinov. Alexei Kovalev had a goal and three assists and Sergei Zubov added three assists for the Rangers, who lead the NHL with 25 victories and 53 points.

The Rangers, 12-0-3 since a home-ice loss to Anaheim on Oct. 19, are also 21-3-3 in their last 27 games. Their unbeaten streak at Madison Square Garden is the longest in club history since the 1971-72 season.

Gordie Howe leads all NHL players with 801 goals. Wayne Gretzky of the Kings has 780. Other players ahead of Gartner include Marcel Dionne with 731; Phil Esposito with 717 and Bobby Hull with 610.

Hartford 3, Ottawa 2--Geoff Sanderson scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime at Hartford.

The win extended the Whalers’ winning streak to four games--their longest in two seasons.

Washington 7, Pittsburgh 3--Randy Burridge scored two goals at Landover, Md., as the Capitals ended an eight-game winless streak.

Don Beaupre stopped 29 shots and Mike Ridley had a goal and two assists for the Capitals, who were 0-6-2 against the Penguins since Nov. 27, 1992.

St. Louis 3, Chicago 2--Brendan Shanahan scored three goals, including the game-winner with 4:14 to play at St. Louis as the Blues extended their winning streak to five games.

Shanahan took a backhand feed from Igor Korolev near the Chicago blue line and shot from the left circle. Goalie Jeff Hackett got a piece of the puck, but it trickled into the net off his pads.

New York Islanders 4, Buffalo 3--Benoit Hogue’s put the puck by Dominic Hasek at 2:28 of overtime at Uniondale, N.Y., extending the Islanders’ winning streak to six games.

Florida 3, Tampa Bay 1--John Vanbiesbrouck made 36 saves to lead the Panthers at Orlando.

Vanbiesbrouck shut out the Lightning on Oct. 9 in Tampa Bay’s home opener and is 5-0-1 against the Lightning in his career. Jody Hull had a goal and an assist for the Panthers.
