Pepperdine Becomes Victim of Texas El Paso Rally, 60-58

Antoine Gillespie made two free throws with 10 seconds to play, capping an 11-0 run that gave Texas El Paso a 60-58 victory over Pepperdine on Wednesday night in the first round of the Sun Carnival Classic at El Paso.

The free throws gave Texas El Paso its only lead of the second half after they overcame a 58-49 deficit in the final four minutes. Derek Noether scored with 4:07 to play to give Pepperdine a 58-49 lead, but the Waves were held scoreless after that.

Texas tied the score, 58-58, on a three-point basket by Gillespie with 1:15 remaining.

Pepperdine turned the ball over on an inbounds pass, and Gillespie was fouled by Damin Lopez with 10 seconds remaining. His free throws made it 60-58.

Lopez then missed three-point attempt, and Pepperdine forward Dana Jones took two offensive rebounds and two shots in the final seconds, missing both.

Jones had 14 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, and Lopez had 13 points for Pepperdine (6-3). Ralph Davis led Texas El Paso (7-1) with 21 points. Gillespie added 16.
