Scripps Sells English-Language San Juan Star: The San Juan Star, Puerto Rico’s only English-language daily newspaper, has been sold to a group of U.S. and Puerto Rican investors, the newspaper reported Sunday. Scripps Howard, the Cincinnati-based publishing unit of E.W. Scripps, did not reveal the purchase price, the paper said. But the Star estimated it as between $10 million and $14 million, and said the latter figure was he book value of the paper. The purchaser is Santa Rita Acquisitions Inc., a Delaware corporation formed by a group of U.S. and Puerto Rican investors. The newspaper, which has a circulation of about 40,000, said he sale followed a difficult year, with revenues totaling $16.5 million and a net loss projected at nearly $500,000.
