NHL ROUNDUP : Whalers Turn On Offense Against the Penguins, 7-2

Seven Hartford Whalers scored and goaltender Sean Burke stopped 34 shots Sunday in a 7-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Hartford, Conn.

Bryan Marchment, Pat Verbeek, Randy Cunneyworth and Michael Nylander each had a goal and an assist for the Whalers, who outshot the Penguins, 36-31. The Whalers have scored six goals four times this season.

Jim Sandlak, Robert Kron and Geoff Sanderson added goals for Hartford, which held the Penguins scoreless in the first and third periods while scoring four times in the final period to put the game out of reach.

Boston 8, Washington 2--Cam Neely recorded the 10th three-goal game of his career to lead the Bruins at Boston.

The hat trick, Neely’s second of the season, gave winger 26 goals in 22 appearances. His three goals Sunday came on power plays.

The Bruins took a 2-0 lead in the first 56 seconds on goals by Bryan Smolinski and Adam Oates.

St. Louis 4, Calgary 3--Craig Janney scored a goal with 1:08 left in overtime to give the Blues the victory at St. Louis.

The goal came after Brett Hull had set a team record for goals as the Blues tied the score with 16:31 remaining in the game.

Hull’s 24th goal this season gave him 353, breaking the record held by Bernie Federko.

Chicago 5, Winnipeg 1--Left wing Jocelyn Lemieux scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Blackhawks at Chicago.

Jeremy Roenick and Dirk Graham also scored for the Blackhawks.

Quebec 6, Dallas 4--Joe Sakic had a goal and two assists at Dallas as the Nordiques handed the Stars only their fifth home defeat.

Montreal 3, Vancouver 2--Patrick Roy returned in goal after sitting out a few games because of a sore back and stopped 28 shots to help the Canadiens win at Vancouver.

Kirk Muller scored early in the third period to lift the Canadiens.

San Jose 4, Edmonton 4--Steve Rice capped a comeback from a two-goal deficit with a third-period goal that gave the Oilers the tie a Edmonton.

Kirk Maltby, Zdeno Ciger and Scott Pearson had the other goals for the Oilers, who salvaged a point after twice trailing by two goals.

Toronto 3, Buffalo 3--Mark Osborne and Dmitri Mironov scored third-period goals as the Maple Leafs rallied for the tie at Buffalo to end a four-game losing streak.
