International Tourism Up 3.8% in 1993: The Madrid-based World Tourism Organization said there were an estimated 500 million tourist arrivals worldwide and that international tourism receipts were slightly more than $324 billion, up 9% from 1992. The organization put annual tourism growth for the 1990s at 3.2%, with 661 million arrivals predicted for 2000 and 937 million for 2010. East Asia/the Pacific was the fastest-growing region in 1993 in both number of tourists and earnings from tourism, with arrivals at 68.5 million and earnings up 15% to $52.5 billion. Europe remained the world’s top destination, with almost 300 million arrivals in 1993, bringing in $162.5 billion. France, Spain and Italy were the leading attractions.
