High Railroad Rates Cited as Shipments End
Cool Carriers Inc., which has imported Australian meat through the Port of Hueneme for the past 1 1/2 years, will discontinue the shipments Jan. 25 because rail shipping costs have risen sharply.
Gerald Fountain, Cool Carriers’ president, says Southern Pacific railroad rates from Ventura County to the East Coast increased more than 35% during 1993. He said his firm has been unloading two shiploads of meat monthly in Port Hueneme--adding an estimated $2.5 million annually to the county’s economy--then shipping the meat for sale on the East Coast.
Port officials hope to find another carrier to import Australian meat through the port.
