An education foundation is hoping to raise a record $750,000 by the end of the summer semester for the city’s school district.

The San Marino Schools Foundation has set the goal $250,000 higher than the amount it raised for 1992-93. The foundation is already on its way to its goal. Contributions are up 32% compared to this time last year, foundation officials said.

Since it was formed 14 years ago, the foundation has raised more than $4 million for the San Marino Unified School District. Contributions are solicited through mailers, speeches, phone banks and events. Parents gave 58% of the money last year.

In 1991, the last time school district foundations were ranked in the state, the San Marino foundation raised the second-highest amount of money among school districts its size, according to the California Consortium of Education Foundations.

The foundation was originally formed in 1979 to provide for special programs and facilities. But now that state cutbacks have reduced the district’s operating budget, the foundation will provide $500,000 for day-to-day operations this year.
