GLENDALE : Grant to Enable Oil Recycling to Continue

Share

Glendale fire officials have received a one-year, $60,000 state grant to continue a program to pick up used motor oil at homes for recycling.

The California Integrated Waste Management Board issued the grant last month for the Glendale Fire Department’s curbside collection program, said Vasken Demirjian, supervisor of the hazardous materials division.

Curbside collection started in April after the waste management board provided $75,000 in seed money to pay for a full-time environmental services worker and a truck to collect used motor oil, Demirjian said.

Every Thursday, the worker is available to pick up used motor oil from Glendale residents who schedule appointments in advance. As of this month, 7,000 gallons of oil--considered a hazardous waste by the state--has been collected and recycled at a plant in Carson, Demirjian said.

Through a state incentive program, the Fire Department has also obtained $820 for recycling used motor oil. Demirjian said that money has mainly been spent on gas and other supplies.

The grant will cover salary costs and help pay for a forklift, estimated to cost $15,000, and other supplies, he said.
