COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : On Off-Night, Arizona Beats Arizona State by 17

Damon Stoudamire scored 30 points and Khalid Reeves added 24 as No. 9 Arizona struggled through an off-night to beat Arizona State, 98-81, Wednesday night at Tucson.

The Wildcats (11-1), who turned in their finest game of the season last Thursday with a 119-95 victory over then-No. 7 Michigan, played lethargically in the first 20 minutes and led only 37-31 at halftime despite a 35-19 rebounding advantage.

But then they got their fast break going and outscored Arizona State, 21-4, to open the second half with Reeves leading the way.

No. 1 Arkansas 87, Mississippi 61--Clint McDaniel made three steals during a 20-0 run that lifted the Razorbacks at Fayetteville, Ark.

The Rebels (5-4) went scoreless for more than six minutes in the first half. During a four-minute span, Mississippi got only one shot out of eight possessions. When the run ended with 9:56 left in the half, Arkansas (10-0) led, 25-5.

No. 2 North Carolina 88, North Carolina State 58--The Tar Heels started the second half with an 18-5 run and finally found their touch from the foul line to win at Chapel Hill.

The Tar Heels (11-1) won their ninth consecutive game and have defeated the Wolfpack (4-7) by an average of 36 points over the last three meetings.

No. 5 Kansas 90, North Carolina Asheville 44--Steve Woodberry scored 16 points to lead the Jayhawks to their 10th consecutive victory, at Lawrence, Kan.

Woodberry hit two short jump shots and a three-pointer in a 28-6 run early in the second half for Kansas (14-1).

No. 10 Purdue 68, Northwestern 67--Glenn Robinson, shut out for the first 7 1/2 minutes, scored 34 points, including the winning basket with nine seconds left, to lead the Boilermakers at Evanston, Ill.

Purdue (12-0) went ahead, 66-61, on Robinson’s three-pointer. But Pat Baldwin made three consecutive baskets as the Wildcats (9-1) took a 67-66 lead with 40 seconds left.

No. 13 Michigan 75, Michigan State 64--Dugan Fife made two three-pointers in a decisive second-half burst and finished with a career-high 13 points to lead the Wolverines at Ann Arbor.

The Wolverines (9-2) never trailed, but they couldn’t put Michigan State away until the Spartans (9-4) went cold over the final 10:47.

No. 17 Cincinnati 103, Chicago State 49--LaZelle Durden scored 33 points as Cincinnati beat Chicago State at Cincinnati.

Durden, coming off a 39-point game against Austin Peay, scored 17 in the first half as Cincinnati (11-2) pulled away to a 45-17 lead over Chicago State (1-12).

No. 25 Marquette 79, Memphis State 67--Damon Key scored 18 points and Roney Eford added 16 at Milwaukee to lead Marquette (8-3). Memphis State (5-5) was led by Justin Wimmer’s 17 points.

Eric Williams scored 21 points off the bench to lead Providence (7-2) to an 85-61 victory over Seton Hall (7-3) at Providence, R.I. . . . Kansas State (10-1) scored the last 11 points in a 67-63 victory over La Salle at Philadelphia. . . . Jeff Webster scored 35 points to lead Oklahoma (8-2) to a 118-91 victory over Baylor (8-3) at Norman, Okla. . . . Dan Cross’ layup with 18 seconds left gave Florida (10-2) a 74-73 victory over Louisiana State (6-3) at Gainesville, Fla. . . . Tom Kleinschmidt scored 24 points as DePaul (9-1) took a 105-70 victory over Maine at Rosemont, Ill. . . .
