School Boards

* Tom Snyder’s letter (Dec. 20) is a rather specious analysis of why right-wing Christians have not been more successful at being elected to school boards. The complaint that “conservative Christians have been virtually locked out of the decision-making process in our educational institutions . . . “ rings as true as the lumping together of everyone Snyder disagrees with as “anti-Christian bigots.”

As president of the board of directors of Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties, I can assure the writer that his generalization, which includes Planned Parenthood, is extreme to a fault. Perhaps that is why many voters are reluctant to entrust their schools’ leadership to religious practitioners. They have a knack of doing too much “lumping together” instead of careful study and analysis of the educational issues before us. What is not understood or agreed with is simply condemned.
