Smashing Pumpkins’ “Siamese Dream” had a smashing week on The Times’ Southern California pop album chart, bounding from No. 11 to No. 5. Meanwhile, Snoop Doggy Dogg has reason to howl with glee: The rapper’s “Doggystyle” not only reclaimed the top spot on the pop album and R&B; charts, but maintained its lead in the rap realm. The way Frank Sinatra’s “Duets” album plummeted, from No. 2 to No. 14 after the holidays, you can only conclude that it was a hugely popular Christmas gift. Without the gift-buying market--or a hit single--can “Duets” rally and return to the Top 10? Don’t bet on it.
