BASKETBALL ROUNDUP
Manual Arts 69, Venice 48--There are several outstanding guards in the Coastal Conference, but very few inside players who can match the talents of Manual Arts David Rickenbacker.
Rickenbacker, a 6-foot-5 forward who signed with San Diego State, scored 31 points as the Toilers won their Coastal Conference opener Friday in only their second game at home.
The Toilers used a two-three trapping zone defense and held Venice to only two points in the first quarter. Then Rickenbacker took control inside, scoring 16 of his team’s 18 points in the second quarter as the Toilers took a 29-14 halftime lead.
The Gondoliers played a zone defense throughout the game, but that did not stop Rickenbacker from scoring inside.
Venice guard Rasheed Hazzard, the son of former UCLA and NBA star Walt Hazzard, had 18 points to lead Venice.
The Toilers played without starting forward John Thompson, who is recovering from a sprained right ankle.
