LA INDIA JOURNAL : U.S. Could Follow India Model on Guns

Share
From LA India Journal, a weekly published in Santa Fe Springs.

In India, no one can buy a gun unless and until he obtains a license from the government. And it is very difficult to get a firearms license as only the district magistrate/deputy commissioner is authorized to grant one and after a thorough police investigation and a recommendation from the superintendent of police. It is very rare that a person is given a license, (usually only someone) of high social and political status and only for self protection.

No one can open a shop or start a business for selling arms and ammunition in India without getting a license from the state government. The government grants only very few licenses for arms and ammunition shops and only in big cities.

The U.S. should follow the Indian system to restrict the sale of guns. The present holders of guns should be asked to surrender their guns and seek licenses. Those who are not considered suitable to keep guns should be financially compensated for the guns they surrender.
