It has been a few days, but Buddy Ryan says he has no regrets about The Punch.

The Houston Oilers’ defensive coordinator told the Philadelphia Inquirer that the blow to offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride on Jan. 2 during the Oilers’ victory over the New York Jets served its purpose.

“I guarantee you won’t see him making calls like that again,” Ryan said.

Ryan hit Gilbride in the face after an Oiler offensive play called about 30 seconds before halftime resulted in a sack and led to a Jet field-goal attempt.

“It’s a third-down offense, not a pro offense,” Ryan said in the interview conducted Tuesday in Houston. “And he has no business coaching the pros. He should be selling insurance.”

Ryan, 59, says Gilbride had it coming.

“Everybody thinks that it’s all my fault, and they keep showing that on TV,” Ryan said. “ . . . He is the one who made the move.

“I don’t know what I said. I might have called him a high school coach. Something like that. He was cussing me and coming at me.”
