Clinton Withdraws Halperin Nomination

WASHINGTON — President Clinton, as expected, on Monday withdrew his controversial nomination of Morton Halperin for a new Defense Department post in charge of peacekeeping policy, at Halperin’s request.
The nomination of a liberal, anti-Vietnam War activist to be assistant secretary of defense for democracy and peacekeeping had sparked harsh criticism from conservatives in Congress.
