USAir Held Liable for Fatal Crash: A federal judge in Cleveland ruled USAir Group Inc. is financially liable for the March, 1992, crash in which 27 people died at New York’s La Guardia Airport. Families of those killed and survivors are seeking compensation for the crash, and awards will be determined later. The company said it could not estimate what the cost may be, and has said it would pay “reasonable” compensation to survivors and the estates. A jury has yet to decide whether the company is liable for punitive damages, which are not insured. The National Transportation Safety Board decided that ice and snow on the wings of Fight 405 to Cleveland caused a problem during the Fokker F-28’s attempted takeoff. The plane veered off the runway and crashed.
