NHL ROUNDUP : Penguins Pile Up Overtime

Kevin Stevens scored his third goal of the game with 51 seconds left in overtime to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins, 5-4, over the Boston Bruins at Pittsburgh.

The Penguins are 4-0-9 in overtime this year and lead the NHL in overtime games and points. They have played three consecutive overtime games, winning two and tying one.

Stevens’ power-play goal capped Pittsburgh’s first hat trick of the season. The Penguins won despite being outshot, 46-24.

Stevens scored the game’s first goal at 4:30 of the first period and scored again at 1:29 of the second period.

Stevens has 26 goals this season. He has scored at least 25 for four consecutive seasons.

Buffalo 5, Chicago 2--Rookie Derek Plante scored one goal and set up two others to lead the Sabres over the Blackhawks at Chicago, giving the Blackhawks their fourth consecutive loss.

Plante’s 15th goal of the season came 2:45 into the game. He assisted on goals by Brad May at 10:45 of the first period and Don Audette only 42 seconds into the second period for a 3-0 lead.

Sabre goalie Dominik Hasek made 24 saves.

Calgary 1, Quebec 0--Robert Reichel scored the game’s only goal midway through the second period, and Andrei Trefilov recorded his first NHL shutout, leading the Flames at Calgary.

Trefilov stopped 19 shots in his fourth career start.

With Quebec’s Mike Ricci in the penalty box, Reichel converted a pass from Wes Walz and beat goaltender Jocelyn Thibault.

Quebec lost its fourth consecutive game.

Toronto 2, Washington 1--Doug Gilmour scored his 14th goal of the season with 50 seconds left to play, lifting the Maple Leafs at Landover, Md.

Gilmour managed to push the rebound of Bill Berg’s shot past goalie Don Beaupre, giving Toronto its fourth consecutive victory. The goal also ended Beaupre’s nine-game home winning streak.

Dave Andreychuk scored his league-leading 35th goal for Toronto, which has lost only once in its last six games. Calle Johansson scored for Washington.

Philadelphia 4, Ottawa 1--Andre Faust scored the go-ahead goal with 5:06 left, sending the Flyers past the struggling Senators at Philadelphia.

Ottawa lost one day after ending its nine-game losing streak with a tie against the New York Islanders. Philadelphia won for only the second time in seven home games.

Faust, called up earlier in the day from Hershey of the American Hockey League, scored on a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle that got through a screen and goalie Craig Billington.

Dallas 5, Edmonton 2--Ulf Dahlen scored twice and led a second-period flurry that sent the Stars past the Oilers at Dallas.

Dean Evason had a goal and an assist for Dallas. He scored on a power play at 10:02 of the second period, giving the Stars a 2-1 lead and starting a string of four consecutive goals.

Dahlen, Mike Craig and Mike McPhee also scored in the second period.
