The Independent Features Project West hopes to be able to announce today its 1993 nominations for its Spirit Awards, traditionally given to the year’s more unusual movies. The announcement has been delayed since Tuesday because of a last-minute investigation into the source of some of the financing of one of the nominated films.

To be eligible, movies must have been produced with financing other than from the major Hollywood film companies.

Kathy Bornstein, producer of the Spirit Awards show, which has become an off-beat annual affair on the weekend before the Academy Awards, said that when the Independent Features Project board saw the nominations list, a qualification question was raised.

She said some members believe they have information that one of the nominees had received some studio funds.

The film in question is “A Dangerous Woman,” starring Debra Winger in the title role, which was released by Gramercy Pictures--a company whose parent companies are Universal Pictures and Polygram Filmed Entertainment.

Producer Naomi Foner said that the IFPW informed her Wednesday afternoon that the movie will be disqualified because of Universal’s attachment. But, Foner said, Universal’s only involvement was after the film made, because the studio guaranteed the film’s distribution.

“This issue is not over,” Foner said. “The illogic and the picayune nature of this will come to light. We were caught in he middle. This seems the opposite of what IFPW is all about, since they should be encouraging non-studio films.”

Bornstein said that the next highest vote-getter will receive nominations.
