NBA ROUNDUP : MacLean, Bullets Overcome Olajuwon’s 45

Don MacLean’s 30 points and Rex Chapman’s 27 offset Hakeem Olajuwon’s season-high 45 Thursday night as the Washington Bullets surprised the Houston Rockets, 120-102, at Landover, Md.

The loss denied Rocket Coach Rudy Tomjanovich his 100th victory, which would have made Tomjanovich the ninth-fastest coach to reach 100 wins.

Michael Adams had 17 points and 12 assists, and Tom Gugliotta added 16 points, as Washington won its second consecutive game, the first time since Nov. 20 and 23 the Bullets have posted back-to-back victories.

Rocket guard Vernon Maxwell, who was hospitalized with an irregular heartbeat last week, returned from a three-game absence, scoring 10 points on four-of-10 shooting in 20 minutes as a reserve.

San Antonio 107, Phoenix 88--David Robinson had 27 points and 16 rebounds at San Antonio as the Spurs won their ninth game of 10, giving the Suns their first two-game losing streak of the season.

The Spurs outscored the Suns, 23-4, in the final 4:49. Robinson, who hit only nine of 25 shots from the field, scored 12 points in the fourth period.

Cleveland 104, New Jersey 93--Brad Daugherty scored 12 of his 26 points on free throws, and the Cavaliers turned up their defense after a poor start at Richfield, Ohio.

Seven Cavaliers reached double figures in scoring. Gerald Wilkins had 17, following a 38-point performance in a win at Orlando the previous night.

New York 94, Detroit 80--Patrick Ewing had 42 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Knicks at Auburn Hills, Mich., sending the Pistons to their 11th consecutive loss.

It was the fourth successive game in which Ewing scored at least 30 points. He is averaging almost 35 points per game over that span.

Detroit is only three losses short of the franchise-record 14-game losing streak set in 1980.

Utah 101, Milwaukee 83--Reserve Jay Humphries scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half at Milwaukee as the Jazz ended a season-high three-game losing streak.

Rookie Vin Baker led all scorers with 17 points and added a career-high 13 rebounds for the Bucks, who shot 33% from the floor.

Sacramento 115, Charlotte 104--Wayman Tisdale scored 22 points and had a season-high 13 rebounds and Trevor Wilson had 10 points during a 19-6 run to open the fourth quarter to led the Kings at Sacramento.

Lionel Simmons added 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Kings, who are 6-3 in their last nine games.
