Volunteers of America of Los Angeles, which operates a skill development program for parents and their children in Harbor City, will open a similar center in North Hollywood next month.

Raymond Hernandez, the agency’s program director for children services, said that the Parent-Child Center--which will be only the second such facility in Los Angeles County--will be housed at its Maud Booth Family Center at 11243 Kittridge St. Currently, VOA operates a child-care center there.

The Parent-Child Center is a component of the federally funded Head Start program, which provides meals, instruction and health services to poor children. The parent-child program is designed to teach parents how to interact with their children, from birth to age 4.

Hernandez said 95 families will be served. Applications are now being accepted for the program. Applicants must meet federal guidelines similar to those for Head Start and must live within five miles of the center.
