Gunman Tricks Letter Carrier, Guns Her Down
Associated Press
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa —
A gunman who shot a letter carrier to death Friday set her up by mailing a certified letter to his son’s house, knowing she would have to deliver it, authorities said.
Ronald Wendell Downs, 51, was charged with murder in the killing of Gloria Heising, who was gunned down as she delivered the mail.
Downs, a former postal worker, pleaded guilty in 1991 to threatening to kill Heising. He was given a one-year suspended sentence.
