LINCOLN HEIGHTS : Library Expansion, Renovation Begin
A $2.1-million renovation began last week on the 1916 building that housed the Lincoln Heights branch of the public library.
The building at 2530 Workman St. will undergo earthquake reinforcement, renovation and a 50% expansion with money from the sale of bonds approved by city voters in 1988, said Robert Reagan, public information director for the Los Angeles Public Library.
The renovation of the Lincoln Heights library, or the Biblioteca del Pueblo de Lincoln Heights, will take about 18 months, with a grand opening expected in the summer of 1995, Reagan said.
The branch has been operating out of a temporary site, at 2217 N. Broadway, since March, 1990, after officials determined that the Workman Street building was not earthquake-safe, Reagan said. Thirteen of the city’s branch libraries that did not meet safety codes are being renovated or replaced with new structures, he said.
With $53.4 million from the bonds, the city is improving 22 of its 63 libraries and building three libraries in the San Fernando Valley.
