NHL ROUNDUP : Roy, Damphousse Lead Canadiens, 3-1

Patrick Roy made 25 saves and Vincent Damphousse scored the winning goal as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Washington Capitals, 3-1, on Monday night.

Eric Desjardins scored in the first period, Damphousse in the second and Gilbert Dionne in the third for Montreal, which had lost two in a row.

The Canadiens limited Washington to only 12 shots through the first two periods, but Dmitri Khristich scored on Washington’s first shot of the final period.

Boston 5, Hartford 3--Cam Neely scored a tie-breaking goal late in the third period as the Bruins maintained their Boston Garden dominance over the Whalers.

The Whalers have not beaten the Bruins in Boston Garden in 13 games since Nov. 12, 1990.

San Jose 3, Calgary 2--Todd Elik’s second goal of the game broke a third-period tie and lifted the Sharks over the Flames at San Jose, earning the Sharks their franchise-record 40th point of the season.

Detroit 6, Tampa Bay 3--Ray Sheppard scored twice and assisted on goals by Steve Yzerman and Paul Coffey when the Red Wings took advantage of Tampa Bay special-teams breakdowns to beat the Lightning at Minneapolis.

Florida 2, N.Y. Islanders 1--Mark Fitzpatrick, a former Islander, made a triumphant return to Long Island, stopping 34 shots as the Florida Panthers topped the .500 mark for the first time in franchise history with a win over the Islanders at Uniondale, N.Y.
