Three Valley-area high school athletes have made oral commitments to attend college on football scholarship: Burbank’s Willie Perryman to USC, Montclair Prep’s Dorrick Roy to Nebraska and Buena’s Brian Williams to Arizona State.

Perryman, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound speedster, played tight end and linebacker for the Bulldogs, but a knee injury limited his offensive output to 22 receptions for 363 yards and four touchdowns.

Roy, a 6-4, 220-pound tight end, had 27 receptions for 459 yards. “(Nebraska Coach (Tom Osborne) told me I had the athletic ability to play right away as a freshman,” Roy said. “That was a big factor for me.”

Williams, a 6-5, 265-pound guard, was a first-team All-Ventura County selection by The Times.

MaliVai Washington pulled off the biggest upset of the first round, defeating second-seeded Michael Stich, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, at the Australian Open.

In the first round of the 1991 Australian Open, Washington squandered a two-set lead and lost to Stich.

Washington took advantage of repeated mistakes by Stich, a semifinalist last year. Stich sprayed shots off the court in all directions and was forced into errors at the net by Washington’s low returns.

Washington, ranked 26th in the world, lost his serve only in the third set.
