LAGUNA NIGUEL : Senior Center Is Named Sea Country

The senior center now under construction will be named Sea Country, a name associated with the city since its early years as an unincorporated, master-planned development in the 1960s.

“Most of us in the community, certainly those of us who have lived here a long time, really identify that name with Laguna Niguel,” said Councilman James F. Krembas. “It’s really appropriate.”

The $3.4-million center, scheduled to open this summer, was officially named the Sea Country Senior and Community Center.

The name was first used by developers to market the Laguna Niguel area in the late 1960s, and was emblazoned on a large sign along Interstate 5 near Crown Valley Parkway up until the early 1980s. Sea Country was widely used by members of the community but faded somewhat after Laguna Niguel’s oceanfront property was turned over to Dana Point when it incorporated in 1989.

City staff had recommended to the council name variations that included Laguna Niguel Senior and Community Center. City Manager Tim Casey also suggested Laguna Oak or Oak Plaza Senior and Community Center.

But during the council’s discussion, Krembas suggested Sea Country, which drew an immediate and enthusiastic response.
