The Clippers played like the Lakers after moving to the Forum because of possible structural damage to the Sports Arena.

The trouble was, the Clippers played like the Lakers of 1994, instead of the Lakers of the 1980s.

The Clippers, who might lead the NBA in team meetings, held yet another one after losing to the Cavaliers, 106-90, before an announced crowd of 9,298 Friday night.

But at least the fans treated the Clippers the way they have treated the Lakers, booing them after they fell behind by 21 points with a little less than four minutes remaining.

Coach Bob Weiss criticized his team for being selfish.

“We didn’t play a good basketball game,” Weiss said. “We didn’t play together, and we’ve got to get to that (point). This is definitely a deterioration over what we’ve been aiming at since our mini-camp.

“I think we tried to do it as individuals tonight, and I saw some of it in (Wednesday night’s loss at) Orlando.’

Informed of Weiss’ critique, Clipper guard Ron Harper said: “Listen closely to what I say,” before uttering a two-word obscenity. “Print that,” he added, knowing that no newspaper could print the obscenity.

How can the Clippers play more unselfishly?

“Just by creating security both on and off the court,” center Elmore Spencer said. “Security and confidence in knowing that the coaching staff and your teammates don’t mind you shooting, rebounding, passing and trying to block shots.

“I think it really showed tonight, because we played one of the most unselfish teams in the NBA.”

Guard Mark Jackson said the Clippers (13-24), who have lost 14 of their last 18 games, can’t snipe at each other.

“We can pull away and say bad things, but this is the time when you stick together,” Jackson said. “It’s easy when things are going bad to throw stones, but we know we have the talent and we just have to play.”

Danny Manning, who had a team-high 21 points and eight rebounds, but missed 11 of 21 shots, thinks the Clippers could learn a lesson from the Cavaliers.

“They are a very unselfish team,” Manning said. “There’s no question about that.”

Guard Mark Price scored 26 points, making 10 of 12 shots--including four three-pointers--as Cleveland (18-19) won for the fifth time in its last six games.

“He’s just one of the best point guards in the league,” Weiss said of Price. “He is quick and he’s a good passer and shooter. When he gets on a roll, it’s hard for anyone to play him really tough.”

With his team trailing by 54-49 at halftime, Weiss benched Spencer and swingman Harold Ellis at the start of the third quarter, inserting forwards Mark Aguirre and Loy Vaught.

But it didn’t do much good.

In the third quarter, Price made his first four shots, including two three-pointers, and scored 10 points as the Cavaliers took a 72-58 lead.

Clipper Notes

Latest Danny Manning trade rumor: The Phoenix Suns have offered the Clippers Cedric Ceballos and center Oliver Miller for Manning, who could become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Manning, who wants to play for a championship contender, said he would welcome a trade to Phoenix, which lost to the Chicago Bulls in the 1993 NBA finals. “Would I want to go there?” Manning said. “Who wouldn’t want to go play there?” Manning, who said he planned to have his sprained left ankle examined by Dr. Steve Lombardo after he experienced swelling following Wednesday night’s game at Orlando, said he didn’t see Lombardo because the swelling had decreased.

Center Stanley Roberts, sidelined for the season after suffering a ruptured right Achilles’ tendon on Dec. 4 against the Lakers, had the cast removed from his leg. Roberts, who appeared fit, said he might be able to play later in the season. “I don’t think we have a chance to make the playoffs, so there’s no need for me to rush back,” he said. The Clippers will make an announcement Monday about whether they will play their next home game, Thursday against the New York Knicks, at the Sports Arena.
